There's a whole slew of R&B fans who fiend for D'Angelo, because he doesn't sound like your run-of-the-mill soul smoothie, and flashes of uniqueness are what keeps many of the slew from slitting their throats in frustration over the everyday ho-hum state of affairs. Enter singer-songwriter Donell Jones, whose second effort asks the question "What makes a hit?" The answer is his single "U Know What's Up": hooks upon hooks, a catchy melody and a sexy but low-key vibe, put together in a way that's more than just retro-trendy. The rest of the Where I Wanna Be is classy and idiosyncratic without being too artsy--a perfect buy if you need a break from all the preening and smoke blowing that's all too common. --Amy Linden

4After listening to this....here is where you will want to be  Dec 06, 1999 By I.B.
This new cd from donnelll is the best to drop from him in a while. This is 3 times better than the first. Every song flows into the next as if they were all one....but they all have a different sound too. It's a good mix of live sounds with studio beats. U might as well press repeat when u play this because some of the beats and harmonies here will have u sining along from start to finish. Left eye is the only guest here and thats enough. Sometimes all u want to hear is the artist whose name is on the cd. No one else. For his sophmore cd, he came strong. No slump here.

After U read this,....I think you might want to get to the nearest store and Get this!..(or just order online).

5Many Many good songs  Nov 13, 2005 By Psboston7 "~ And so it Goes ~"
I have this CD and the one that came out afterwards and I must say this is still my all time favorite. Donnell Jones has a very nice voice there is a nice variety on this CD Ballads, Dance tunes and just plain "chillin" music. A nice CD to just have playing as background music if you have family over, good use of the individual instruments in at least 3 of the songs on the CD. Overall a REALLY great buy.

If you like his style of music I would also suggest Case, Joe and even Jon B.

44-1/2 stars  Apr 06, 2002 By Anthony Rupert "shut up, Shut Up, SHUT UP!!!"
At the 2000 American Music Awards, a certain someone won an award for Best Male R&B Artist...that someone was Donell Jones. After that a lot of people were like, WHO? Donell was very deserving for the award, because Where I Wanna Be is one of the best things I've ever heard.

He was really on top of his game with the first single "U Know What's Up". It's so simple, but so catchy. Then he followed up with the best song on the album, the title track. Here is where he ponders whether or not he wants a relationship. It may not sound like much on paper, but you have to hear the way he says it.

Other gems on the album are the funky "This Luv" (which was also released, but few people knew about it), "It's Alright" and "When I Was Down". "Have You Seen Her" reminds us of those times when we caught a glimpse of an attractive person real fast and never saw them again, and "Pushin'" drives the point home that there's a difference between being loved and being smothered.

It's a little hard to tell where he's going in the skit at the end of "Think About It", but you know where this ALBUM should be going? Straight into your CD player.

5THIS JOINT IS HITTIN!  Feb 06, 2000 By WY
This CD surprised me alot. I bought it just for "You know what's up" but I got much more than I expected. In a time when you buy CD's and hold your breath to see if you wasted your money, Where I wanna be sets it self apart from the field. No stupid little skits after every track and no swearing while "keeping it real" verbally.

4Good and very professional work!  May 21, 2000 By Joanna
I waited for this album for a long time, and when I finally got it... I thought it was a classy, soulful and good r&b/soul album with a personal Donell twist! Okay, I love the album, so but why did I rate it worth only four stars? Well, don't get me wrong, the tracks are great, but most of them are pretty much alike. The same tempo, same beat and even the lyrics are about same things. I would've liked to hear more different kinds of track on this album (perhaps more funky or more jazzy tracks inc. more harmonies), so I'm a little disappointed because of that. But hey, Donell has his own unique style in songwriting and performing...and that's how it should be! ...But I love Donell! His voice is so soft and deep and he can groove into anyone's hearth with his soulful and melodic rhymes. His voice has the sweetness and power of Stevie Wonders voice, but it has his own personal swing in it. My fav tracks are: where I wanna be, shorty, have you seen her, and (of course) you know what's up! I advice you to check this album out! It's very well worth the price!
