 If you buy one 80's compilation, make this it! Dec 12, 1999

If you're looking for a good variety of memorable 80's music and don't want to spend a lot of money, then pick up this 20-track jewel of a compilation CD. First of all, it has a good blend of the essential favorites--"Video Killed the Radio Star" (recently covered for the Wedding Singer), also "Come On Eileen" (as revived in Chris Farley's Tommy Boy as well as covered by the ska band Save Ferris), that great Tears for Fears song (which Dennis Miller now uses as his theme song), Tainted Love (the infectious song from the Pepsi commercial..."I've got to get away..."), and Madness' "Our House". Also included are guilty pleasures like the Wang Chung cut, Stray Cats' "Rock This Town", and Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon". The CD is marvelous and also the best 80's comp I have found thus far. A close second is the Millenium 80's New Wave Party from Rhino Records. Get them both if you crave the 80's!

One of the best overall 80's compilations available Mar 16, 2002

When it comes to 80's compilations, the majority of them have mostly filler 'hits' that most people either don't care about or don't even know, along with a few great hits that people actually like and want.Pure 80's is a major exception. It provides a great overall track list that almost any 80's enthusiast will know by heart and want to own, but it's an even greater choice for mediocre fans and newbies who are looking for a single-CD collection to give them an overview of what 80's music was like. This album, Pure 80's, almost has it all when it comes to great 80's music. It has essential hits that should be owned by any fan of the 80's ("Everybody Have Fun Tonight", "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", "Tainted Love", etc.), other great unforgettable masterpieces ("Centerfold", "Addicted To Love", "Our House", "Higher Love", etc.), and even some one-hit wonders that caused quite a stir back in the day ("Relax" and "Come on Eileen"). The only genres (of the ones I can think of right now) that are nowhere to be seen in Pure 80's is hair metal, heavy metal, instrumentals, and rap. As an added bonus for REAL 80's fans, the booklet includes what year the song was made, and what position each song climbed to on the pop charts. To sum it all up, Pure 80's doesn't have ALL the great 80's songs (that's an impossibilty for a single CD), but it provides a great, well-rounded lineup that is well worth owning to say the least. If you love great 80's music, or if you're looking for an album to give you a sampling of what the decade's tunes were like, Pure 80's is a must have.

For the cost of the CD, this is a very good overview of the technicolor day-glo era. There are of course the usual omissions that happen due to licencing and so on. The Bangles, Madonna, Price, Michael Jackson, Sting, etc. And there are no liner notes, which is disappointing. However, this is an excellent collection of the 80's sound, and the price is right.

A Superb Sonic Sensation Of 80's Hits! Sep 25, 1999
With the MTV debut song "Video Killed the Radio Star" and a generous 19 more keyboard-synth heavy songs that could have only come from the Reagan Era, this collection should appeal to the early to mid-80's MTV fans that remember when they spun "only" music video 24 hrs a day. As an "80's child" that graduated high school in '84, I think these songs serve as a great soundtrack to those days. I would definitely recommend this over any other single 80's CD out there. Hope there are more to follow!

God, I Miss the Decade of Excess! May 11, 2000

This CD makes me so nostalgic for my childhood... I chose to rate it at 4 stars, though, because there are some great 80s bands/artists missing. But, this is bound to happen when you can only choose a handful of songs to speak for an entire decade, and I do think Pure 80s does well. From the first video ever shown on MTV ("Video Killed The Radio Star"), this CD accurately captures some of the best 80s tunes. "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears are two of the all-time greatest anthems of the 80s excess and ambition that we spent so many years bashing in the 90s (which I find rather hypocritical) and great songs by Culture Club, Duran Duran, Stray Cats, Squeeze, Dexy's Midnight Runners, etc. A worthy investment for any 80s fan!
