goin down slow Oct 25, 2001
By kevin blankenship This is in my opinion the best (money) I have ever spent on a cd. There are limitless replay opportunites with this album. His version of Going Down Slow (a Gatemouth Moore original)is awesome it turns a slow classic into a fast rythem masterpiece. Every song on the album is beautifully done. I have without a doubt listened to this cd more than other of the over three hundred Blues cd's I currently own. It is a must have for any true Blues fan. Get it, you will not be disappointed. The first track should be the music you start any roadtrip or "I have had enough trip" with. Don't cheat yourself.

An infectious collection by a master of the blues. Mar 03, 1999
By Jeff Wignall
"The Joy of Digital Photography"
Bobby "Blue" Bland is a master of the sly blues: just when you think a song is going to slip into a predictable blues groove, he cocks back and roars or tosses off a throaty growl that grabs at the base of your spine. It's always magic in person, nearly always magic on records. This CD is NOT his best work and it left me cold on the first few listens; it has a definite 70's quality (hey, it was recorded in 1973) that sometimes edges toward disco arrangements, but as I said, Mr. Bland is such a great master, he rescues it. "If Loving You is Wrong," a song that would (and should) bomb by any other artist is somehow twisted into a tight blues riff by Bland. Overall though, after leaving this in my stereo for several days, I've come to love the CD, despite the 70s song selections, and occasionally corny backing orchestrations, Bland's style and command of his voice rescues it. If you're buying your first Bland CD, look for his recent "Live on Beale Street" or classic "First Class Blues" but if you like a soft blues listen with great horns, give this a try. Not Bland at his best, to be sure, but you just have to love this guy's authenticity. Oh, and if you're a Van Morrison fan (as I am) you'll learn where Van finds a LOT of his horn and backing vocal arrangements. Van only borrows from the best.

Barney ... My most favorite blues yet. Apr 16, 1999 Bobby "Blue" Bland had done great job in this album. Every single song in this album is great. If you have heard these songs in his other albums, I am telling you, they are completely different in this album. All the songs are enhanced with great music that are different that his other albums. This is the second time I am buying this album; since my first one was stolen from me.

Coming Back for More Nov 09, 2008
By Lee Armstrong I found a vinyl LP of this album @ a vintage shop in Wilmington NC. Through the scratchy grooves came some of the most powerful soulful blues I've heard. It sparked my living room with complete surprise. I'm so glad the CD version is available. It is well worth seeking out 35 years after the album was first released! The set opens with "This Time I'm Gone for Good," a slow ballad with Bobby milking every ounce of feeling with some incredibly juicy blues guitar, "I should've stayed gone when I left before; You do me wrong when we're together, but I keep coming back for more." Liner notes indicate the track went to #5 on the R&B charts. Vernon Morrison & Deadrick Malone's "Up & Down World" continues the soulful groove. Gerry Goffin wrote the lyrics to "It's Not the Spotlight"; and the song's opening has an eerie similarity to Carole King's "Child of Mine" from her Writer CD. "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right" has more of that lovely slow soul that mirrors a Me-&-Mrs.-Jones theme. "Going Down Slow" also went to the R&B top twenty with Michael Omartian's piano oozing loads of feeling to match Bland's vocal chops. "The Right Place at the Right Time" opens with a peppy "Grazing in the Grass" percussion and then blossoms into a lovely pop blues. Leon Russell wrote "Help Me Through the Day" that was recently recorded by John Mayall & cuts a classic blues ache. "Where My Baby Went" is another strong workingman's blues. "I've Got to Use My Imagination" closes the CD with another classic track. Joan Osborne recently recorded it on her Breakfast in Bed CD as well as versions by Joe Cocker from his One Night of Sin CD and versions by Gladys Knight & Tom Jones. "His California Album" is a stunning set that sounds fresh 35 years later. Don't miss it! Enjoy!

Thought it would be better... Aug 17, 2009

"MoSki"
I ordered "His California" and I was a bit disappointed. It was okay, but I just thought it would be better based on the reviews that I read. It sounded a bit too commercial for me and like a bunch of extra songs that didn't do too well made into an album. Maybe Im just not a big enough Bobby fan and wasnt able to appreciate it as much as some of his other work.
